NATURALIZATION

Naturalization, also known as citizenship by naturalization, is the process by which a foreign national acquires the citizenship of another country. The process is subject to specific requirements established under the citizenship laws of the country concerned.

In Indonesia, matters concerning citizenship are regulated under Law No. 12 of 2006 concerning Indonesian Citizenship.

Naturalization Application Process

An application for Indonesian citizenship is submitted through the relevant government authorities, including the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, through an Indonesian Embassy or Consulate, or through the relevant local authorities, as applicable.

Once the application has been approved, the applicant is required to take an oath or pledge of allegiance before the relevant District Court (Pengadilan Negeri).

Requirements for Naturalization

Under Law No. 12 of 2006 concerning Indonesian Citizenship, the requirements for obtaining Indonesian citizenship through naturalization include:

  1. Residency in Indonesia
    At the time of submitting the application, the applicant must have resided in the territory of the Republic of Indonesia for at least 5 consecutive years or 10 non-consecutive years.

  2. Age Requirement
    The applicant must be at least 18 years old or already married.

  3. Language and Constitutional Requirements
    The applicant must be able to speak Indonesian properly and correctly and acknowledge the state foundation of the Republic of Indonesia, Pancasila, and the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia (UUD 1945).

  4. Physical and Mental Health
    The applicant must be in good physical and mental health.

  5. Criminal Record
    The applicant must never have committed a criminal offense or been sentenced to imprisonment for one year or more.

  6. No Dual Citizenship
    Acquisition of Indonesian citizenship must not result in the applicant holding dual citizenship.

  7. Employment or Income
    The applicant must have a permanent source of income or employment.

  8. Naturalization Fee
    The applicant must pay the applicable naturalization fee into the state treasury.
